IPEN Webinar 2021 - “Synthetic data: what use cases as a privacy enhancing technology?”

IPEN webinar 2021

IPEN events bring together privacy experts and engineers from public authorities, industry, academia and civil society to discuss relevant challenges and developments for the technological implementation of data protection and privacy.

The EDPS organised on 16 June 2021 an Internet Privacy Engineering Network (IPEN) Webinar entitled:

“Synthetic data: what use cases as a privacy enhancing technology?”

The workshop focused on the use of “synthetic data” as a possible technology to mitigate data protection risks. Synthetic data are not “real life” data but are created from the real ones in a way that they can still be useful in context. In the current debate on the use and policing of Artificial Intelligence in the EU and elsewhere, the offer of synthetic data as a privacy enhancing technology has dramatically risen. The aim of the workshop was to explore possible use cases and relevant limitations, to raise awareness and better frame the potential of this technology.
