On 1 October, Convention 108 and its additional Protocol regarding supervisory authorities and transborder data flows entered into force in respect of Cabo verde and Mexico, bringing the total number of Parties to the Convention to 53 countries. Together with the countries participating as observers in the Committee of Convention 108, it’s 70 countries that work together on the rights to privacy and data protection. As from 25 May 2018, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has been set to succeed the Article 29 Working Party, as established in the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The new legal framework outlines that the EDPS provides the secretariat for the EDPB. The secretariat will offer administrative and logistic support for the EDPB as well as perform analytical work to contribute to the EDPB’s tasks. Watch the gallery of the GDPR Day.

The protection of personal data is essential in a democratic society. It is at the core of the new data protection rules set out in the General Data Protection Regulation, applicable from today. The key word of the reform is accountability. Companies, organisations and institutions should ensure compliance, verify compliance and demonstrate compliance both to individuals and at the request of a Data Protection Authority. A new Regulation governing data processing by the EU institutions, bodies and agencies will soon replace the current Regulation 45/2001. To raise awareness on the current and new data protection rules the EDPS organised a series of workshops in Luxembourg this week.

The report by the EDPS' Ethics Advisory Group will help advance the debate on digital ethics that the EDPS will continue, focusing on how we can make technology work in the interests of human dignity, culminating at the 40th International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners which the EDPS will co-host in October 2018.

Through the GDPR, the EU has lead the way in safeguarding fundamental rights in the digital age.
