EDPS report: EU Institutions’ resilience to COVID-19

New Regulation on European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) will strengthen personal data protection of asylum seekers

Today marks the entry into force of Regulation 2021/2303, establishing a European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) to replace and succeed to the European Asylum Support Office (EASO), and transform it into a fully-fledged asylum agency.

EDPS orders Europol to erase data concerning individuals with no established link to a criminal activity

On 3 January 2022, the EDPS notified Europol of an order to delete data concerning individuals with no established link to a criminal activity (Data Subject Categorisation). This Decision concludes the EDPS’ inquiry launched in 2019.

Fair access to credit through consumer and data protection

On 26 August, the EDPS published his Opinion on the European Commission’s proposed Directive on consumer credits. The proposal aims to modernise existing consumer credit rules to address changes brought about by digitalisation and other market trends, such as the increased use of online sales channels or new forms of consumer credits, for example short-term high-cost loans.

EDPB & EDPS adopt joint opinion on the Data Governance Act (DGA)

 

Brussels, 10 March - The EDPB and EDPS adopted a joint opinion on the proposal for a Data Governance Act (DGA). The DGA aims to foster the availability of data by increasing trust in data intermediaries* and by strengthening data-sharing mechanisms across the EU. In particular, the DGA intends to promote the availability of public sector data for reuse, sharing of data among businesses and allowing personal data to be used with the help of a ‘personal data-sharing intermediary’. The DGA also seeks to enable the use of data for altruistic purposes.

EDPS Opinion on Europol’s mandate review

The EDPS published today his Opinion on the proposed amendments to the Europol Regulation which aim, in part, to broaden the scope of Europol’s mandate in response to changes in the security landscape and increasingly complex threats. The Opinion assesses the necessity and proportionality of these proposed amendments, taking into account the importance of aligning the data protection rules for Europol with the data protection rules for other European institutions, bodies and agencies (EUIs), under Regulation (EU) 2018/1725.
