Workshop: Data Protection within International Organisations

The EDPS and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) are co-organising the 7th edition of the Data Protection Workshop within International Organisations, which will take place on 12–13 July at the UNHCR Global Service Centre in Copenhagen.

This workshop, initiated by the EDPS in 2005, aims at bringing together international organisations to:

  • Share experience and best practice in the field of data protection and analyse its impact as part of good governance within international organisations;
  • Summarise the most recent regulatory developments at international level in the area of privacy and data protection and analyse the potential implications of such developments for international organisations;
  • Analyse the state of play of data protection within international organisations;
  • Discuss the progress made since the last workshop

In the year of the entry into force of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation and the adoption of the Protocol modernizing Council of Europe Convention 108, the workshop’s rationale of bringing together international organisations to share experience, practice and analysis of common challenges appears more relevant than ever. This time the agenda includes discussions on privacy standards and oversight mechanism for international organisations; accountability in practice; international transfers and legal grounds for processing personal data in the international organisations context.

EDPS Trainees Conference 2018: "Who Cares about Childrens' Data?"

Dear all,

The trainees of the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), are pleased to invite you to our lunchtime conference ‘Who Cares About Children's Data?’, which will take place on 29 June from 12.00 to 14.00 at the EDPS ground floor Meeting Room (Rue Montoyer 30, 1000 Bruxelles).

The conference is inspired by the fact that the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the first data protection legislation at EU level that explicitly recognises that minors deserve ‘specific protection’ of their personal data. Now that the GDPR has come into force, we find it more relevant than ever to address the topic both from a legal and an ethical point of view.

The European Data Protection Supervisor Giovanni Buttarelli will open the debate, moderated by by Christian D’Cunha, Head of the Private Office of the EDPS. Prof. Gloria González Fuster (Research Professor at the Law, Science, Technology and Society (LSTS) Research Group of the VUB), Ms Cornelia Kutterer (Senior Director, EU Government Affairs, Privacy and Digital Policies at Microsoft), Mr Hans Martens (Digital Citizenship Team and Programme Manager at European Schoolnet) will lead the discussion on the topic, which will be followed by a Q&A session. The Assistant Supervisor Wojciech Wiewiorowski will close the event.

Parents or not, eager to start a billionaire business addressed to minors, tired of having your homepage of Facebook and Instagram spammed with photos of babies, or simply curious to try EDPS catering, we know you care about children's data, so we look forward to seeing you there!

Your personal information is collected, shared, used and stored by individuals, organisations and public authorities every day. Recruitment activities, video surveillance and health data collection are just a few examples of this. It is the job of the EDPS to ensure that the European institutions and bodies respect your data protection rights when they process your personal data.

The EDPS stand will be at the European Commission as part of the EU institutions' Europe Day celebrations.

Located on the ground floor of the Berlaymont building, EDPS staff will be on hand to answer questions about your privacy rights and how to protect your personal information. Free goodies and information will be on offer, as well as fun and interactive activities for both children and adults to enjoy. You will also have a chance to win one of 20 USB sticks, simply by taking part in our fun, simple quiz!

Whether shopping online, using a smartphone or applying for jobs, data protection affects us all, so be sure to visit our stand to find out more!
