An Orwellian Premonition: a discussion on the perils of biometric surveillance

An Orwellian Premonition: a discussion on the perils of biometric surveillance

On April 21st 2021, the European Commission presented its Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council laying down harmonised roles on Artificial Intelligence (AI). In the Joint Opinion 5/2021 of the EDPB and the EDPS it is stressed that the Proposal has important data protection and privacy implications. With a focus on biometric surveillance, the EDPS and EDPB trainees explore possible implications stemming from the Commission's Proposal and invite you to participate in an engaging discussion.

The EDPS and EDPB adopt a strong stance on AI in their Joint Opinion, calling for a general ban on any use of AI for an automated recognition of human features in publicly accessible spaces and on biometric categorisation, noting that it affects human dignity to have a computer predict or classify individuals’ future behaviour without their consent.

It is on the back of this heightened call to action that the trainees wish to shed further light on the the perils associated with the use of biometric surveillance.

Against this backdrop, the EDPS and EDPB trainees invite you to their conference entitled “An Orwellian Premonition: a discussion on the perils of biometric surveillance”.
