Following the presentation of the European Data Protection Supervisor's 2023 Annual Report at the European Parliament, we invite you to a press conference to present an overview of the EDPS’ activities in 2023. As Wojciech Wiewiórowski pursues the rest of his EDPS mandate, the press conference will also present the progress made to achieve his goals set out in the EDPS Strategy 2020-2024 to shape a safer digital future.

Looking back, the year 2023 has been eventful. We doubled down on our efforts to support EU lawmakers with their initiatives - including on artificial intelligence (AI), digital euro, financial services, cybersecurity - whilst ensuring that these uphold individuals’ fundamental rights to data protection and privacy. Particular focus of our work also permeated to supervising the EU’s Area of Freedom, Security and Justice, international transfers of personal data, and pursuing initiatives in the fields of technology monitoring and foresight.
Going forward, the EDPS will focus on a series of priorities, such as the implementation of the AI Act, supervision and enforcement actions, and international cooperation to promote global common approaches on privacy and data protection challenges. In 2024, we are also commemorating two decades of safeguarding citizens’ rights to privacy and data protection. Our 20th anniversary is a milestone that provides us with a unique opportunity to reflect on the past to chart new courses, culminating to our “European Data Protection Summit: Rethinking Data in a Democratic Society” organised in Brussels on 20 June.
