International Cooperation

The EU has set up a number of large-scale IT systems including Eurodac; the Visa Information System; the Schengen Information System; the Customs Information System; the Internal Market Information System.

The supervision of these databases is shared between the national Data Protection Authorities and the EDPS.

In order to ensure a high and consistent level of data protection, national DPAs and the EDPS work together to coordinate the supervision of these databases.

Online Workshop: Data Protection within International Organisations 2020

The EDPS will host an online edition of the Data Protection Workshop within International Organisations, on the afternoons of 8 & 9 October 2020.
This workshop, initiated by the EDPS in 2005, aims to bring together international organisations to:

  • Share experience and best practice in the field of data protection and analyse its impact as part of good governance within international organisations;
  • Summarise the most recent regulatory developments at international level in the area of privacy and data protection and analyse the potential implications of such developments for international organisations;
  • Analyse the state of play of data protection within international organisations;
  • Discuss the progress made since the last workshop.

In light of the continuing public health crisis around the world, the theme of this year’s workshop is Data protection in international organisations in times of crisis. Topics to be discussed include the impact of the pandemic for the protection of personal health data in a humanitarian context, remote working, contact tracing apps, level of preparedness and lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic and new developments and best practices to facilitate transfers to international organisations.

Opening of negotiations for a new partnership with the UK

EDPS Opinion on Opening of negotiations for a new partnership with the UK.

The objective of the negotiations is to establish a partnership between the Union, and Euratom where relevant, and the United Kingdom, that is comprehensive and covers areas of interest outlined in the Political Declaration. Such partnership would be composed of three main parts: general provisions, containing inter alia the underlying principles and basis for cooperation as well as the governance provisions, an economic partnership and a security partnership.
