The recent rulings of the European Court of Justice concerning data retention and search engines (Google Spain) illustrate the increasing relevance of the fundamental rights to privacy and to the protection of personal data in the context of new information services and data transfers in a global world.

Against the background of rapid technological developments and the growing reality of ubiquitous surveillance of personal data by private and public entities alike, the European Union is striving for new rules to effectively protect personal data also in the 21st century.

Andrea Voβhoff, the German Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, and Peter Hustinx, the European Data Protection Supervisor, have the pleasure to invite high-level representatives of all institutional and political actors involved to debate outstanding issues and necessary steps to be taken to bring the reform of EU data protection law to a timely and successful conclusion.

Le Conseil de l'Europe et l'autorité française de protection des données, la Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertés (CNIL), accueilleront la Conférence européenne 2014 des autorités de protection des données à Strasbourg.

Cette année, la conférence portera sur la coopération et analysera comment les autorités nationales de protection des données peuvent travailler ensemble pour produire des politiques et des réponses plus efficaces. Ce thème vise à relever les défis posés par l'échange de données à caractère personnel au niveau mondial.

L'événement est ouvert aux membres des autorités de la protection des données accréditées et aux observateurs. Il permettra aux délégués de partager leurs idées et expériences sur la meilleure façon de renforcer le droit fondamental à la protection des données.

Les institutions européennes marqueront à nouveau l'anniversaire de la Déclaration Schuman et célébreront la fête de l'Europe par une journée portes ouvertes à Bruxelles.

Everyday personal information is collected, shared, used and stored by individuals, organisations and public authorities.  Recruitment activities, video surveillance and health data collection are just a few examples of this.

47 countries of the Council of Europe as well as European institutions, agencies and bodies will celebrate the eighth annual European Data Protection Day. This date marks the anniversary of the Council of Europe Convention 108 on the protection of personal information, the first legally binding international instrument related to the field of data protection

Data Protection Day 2014 is an opportunity for the EDPS, along with Data Protection Officers from the EU institutions to raise awareness among EU staff and the general public on their data protection rights and obligations. These rights and obligations are set out in the EU Data Protection Regulation and their implementation within the EU administration is supervised by the EDPS.
