The annual IPEN workshop took place in Rome on 12 June 2019. (The event was followed by the Annual Privacy Forum 2019 organised by ENISA on 13-14 June, at the same venue).
The ‘state of the art’ in data protection by design – Current state and future trends
This year, the annual workshop focused on what constitutes ‘state of the art’ technology in data protection by design, in an effort to help establish a common understanding of this concept. Under the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Data Protection Regulation for European Institutions (EDPR), the need to consider personal data protection when designing technological solutions is now a legal obligation. Controllers and developers, regulators and legal experts all need to understand what they should consider as ‘state of the art’ technology.
With the help of experts from academia, industry and public authorities, the workshop explored four key areas: the concept of ‘state of the art’ in the fields of law, information security and privacy engineering; business models enabling individuals to be in control of their data; privacy engineering, and anonymization and pseudonymisation. Around 80 participants from both the legal and technical field attended the workshop.
