The recent rulings of the European Court of Justice concerning data retention and search engines (Google Spain) illustrate the increasing relevance of the fundamental rights to privacy and to the protection of personal data in the context of new information services and data transfers in a global world.

Against the background of rapid technological developments and the growing reality of ubiquitous surveillance of personal data by private and public entities alike, the European Union is striving for new rules to effectively protect personal data also in the 21st century.

Andrea Voβhoff, the German Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, and Peter Hustinx, the European Data Protection Supervisor, have the pleasure to invite high-level representatives of all institutional and political actors involved to debate outstanding issues and necessary steps to be taken to bring the reform of EU data protection law to a timely and successful conclusion.

Der Europarat und die französische Datenschutzbehörde (CNIL - Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertés) Gastgeber der Europäischen Konferenz 2014 der Datenschutzbehörden in Straßburg.

Dieses Jahr wird sich die Konferenz auf die Zusammenarbeit konzentrieren und untersuchen, wie die nationalen Datenschutzbehörden am besten kooperieren sollten, um wirksamere Maßnahmen und Reaktionen zu erzielen. Dieses Thema ist eine Antwort auf die durch den Austausch von personenbezogenen Daten auf globaler Ebene gestellten Herausforderungen.

Die Veranstaltung ist für Mitglieder der akkreditierten Datenschutzbehörden und Beobachter offen. Sie bietet den Delegierten eine Möglichkeit, ihre Ideen und Erfahrungen auszutauschen, wie das Grundrecht auf Datenschutz am besten gestärkt werden kann.

Die EU-Einrichtungen erneut den Jahrestag der Schuman-Erklärung, und feiern das Europafest mit einem Tag der offenen Tür in Brüssel.

Everyday personal information is collected, shared, used and stored by individuals, organisations and public authorities.  Recruitment activities, video surveillance and health data collection are just a few examples of this.

47 countries of the Council of Europe as well as European institutions, agencies and bodies will celebrate the eighth annual European Data Protection Day. This date marks the anniversary of the Council of Europe Convention 108 on the protection of personal information, the first legally binding international instrument related to the field of data protection

Data Protection Day 2014 is an opportunity for the EDPS, along with Data Protection Officers from the EU institutions to raise awareness among EU staff and the general public on their data protection rights and obligations. These rights and obligations are set out in the EU Data Protection Regulation and their implementation within the EU administration is supervised by the EDPS.
