Supervision Conference: Data protection and criminal justice

The European Data Protection Supervisor - EDPS, the European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation - Eurojust, and the European Public Prosecutor’s Office - EPPO, are hosting a conference on data protection in the field of criminal justice in the EU.

  • When: 29 November 2022 from 8:45 to 18:00 CET
  • Where: Borschette Conference Centre, Brussels, Belgium / Online

The event will bring together data protection experts, criminal law practitioners and policymakers to reflect on data protection in criminal prosecution and judicial cooperation in the EU.

Taking stock of the latest developments concerning EPPO and Eurojust, we will discuss their impact on the related data protection framework. We will also consider the EDPS’ role as a supervisory authority and the ways to improve cooperation and compliance between the various organisations.

The conference is also an opportunity to continue the reflections started during the EDPS Conference 2022 - The future of data protection: Effective enforcement in the digital world. Participants will debate on how to ensure effective enforcement of data protection rules in the area of criminal law both at European and at national levels.

The three topics that will be covered during the conference are:

  • the recent changes in Eurojust’s legislative framework and their impact on the way the agency processes personal data;
  • a review of the first year of EPPO’s operations, in particular, the challenges and opportunities related to its heterogenic structure;
  • the potential improvements in the governance model to make supervision more effective and better coordinated at European and national level.

The conference agenda and speakers' bios are available on the dedicated page.

If you missed the event or you want to re-play the discussion, you can watch the full recording of the conference from here:

Workshop: Data Protection within International Organisations 2022

The EDPS and the World Food Programme are co-organising the 2022 edition of the Data Protection Workshop within International Organisations. The workshop will take place on 12–13 May at the WFP premises in Rome.

This workshop, initiated by the EDPS in 2005, aims to bring together international organisations to:

  • Share experience and best practice in the field of data protection and analyse its impact as part of good governance within international organisations;
  • Summarise the most recent regulatory developments at international level in the area of privacy and data protection and analyse the potential implications of such developments for international organisations;
  • Analyse the state of play of data protection within international organisations;
  • Discuss the progress made since the last workshop

Although the EDPS hosted an online edition in October 2020, the last in-person meeting took place in 2019, before COVID-19 went global. The data protection landscape has been impacted dramatically by the pandemic and subsequent events requiring IOs to act, particularly in the humanitarian field. The workshop’s rationale of bringing together international organisations to share experience, practice and analysis of common challenges appears more relevant than ever. Topics to be discussed include data subjects' rights, data breach response, international data transfers, privacy risk management and disinformation.

After two years, the Open Day of the EU Institutions is back with an in-person event, as part of the Europe Day celebrations. This year, to celebrate the historical Schuman Declaration anniversary (9th of May), the EU institutions shall focus on youth engagement in the context of the European Year of Youth. Europe needs the vision, insights, and participation of young people to build a better future, more inclusive and respectful, digital and sustainable at the same time.

The EDPS, as the European Union’s (EU) independent data protection authority, focuses its main efforts in ensuring the protection of personal data and privacy when EU institutions and bodies process the personal information of individuals. The EDPB contributes to the consistent application of data protection rules throughout the European Union and promotes cooperation between the data protection authorities of the European Economic Area.
